Cassidy & Jackson | A Rainy Engagement Session in Omaha’s Old Market and Lake Manawa

Some of the best photographs happen when you embrace the unexpected! Cassidy and Jackson’s engagement session was the perfect example of that. We planned for beautiful fall photographs in Omaha’s Old Market and at Lake Manawa, but Mother Nature had other ideas. With rain in the forecast and an unusually wet fall, we decided to move forward anyway—and I'm so glad we did!

Cassidy and Jackson had taken time off work and traveled from Lincoln for their session, and they were excited to make the most of our time together. We ended up with three outfits, multiple locations, changing weather, stormy skies, and some playful photographs in the rain. Their session was completely unique to them, and we had quite the adventure!

But beyond the beautiful locations and changing weather, one of my favorite things about engagement sessions is getting to know my couples before their wedding day. It's a chance for us to build a connection, learn how you interact together, and help you feel comfortable in front of my camera long before your wedding arrives.

Natural Posing That Still Looks Polished

One of the biggest concerns I hear from couples is that they don't know how to pose or worry they'll look awkward in photographs. You don't need modeling experience, and you certainly don't need to know what to do with your hands!

My approach combines thoughtful posing with natural interaction. I'll guide you into flattering positions, paying attention to your angles, posture, hands, and how you stand together. Then I'll give you simple prompts and opportunities to interact so your photographs reflect your personalities and connection.

You might walk together, lean into one another, whisper something that makes the other person smile, or share a quiet moment. I'll guide you throughout the process so you aren't left wondering what to do, while still giving you room to be yourselves.

The result is a balance of beautiful, intentional portraits and genuine expressions. You look your best, but the photographs still feel like you.

Cassidy and Jackson were wonderful to photograph because we could move between more polished poses and playful interactions throughout the session. I want my couples to enjoy their time together rather than feel like they're constantly performing for the camera.

And the best part? By the time your wedding day arrives, you'll already know what it's like to work with me!

Three Outfits, Two Locations, and So Many Different Looks

Cassidy and Jackson chose three outfits for their engagement session, which is a great way to add variety without making the day feel rushed.

We started in Omaha's Old Market, where the combination of historic red brick, ivy, and charming downtown architecture provided a beautiful backdrop for their dressier look. This outfit created an upscale, classic feel that worked especially well against the rich textures and warm tones of the neighborhood.

From there, we switched to a more casual outfit and explored additional areas of the Old Market. Changing outfits gives us the opportunity to create a different mood and try a variety of poses. We can incorporate benches, seated portraits, walking photographs, and more playful interactions, including those fun moments when one person picks the other up!

Cassidy and Jackson also loved some photographs I'd previously shown them from Lake Manawa, so we decided to make the short drive—about 15 minutes from the Old Market—to finish their session there.

Three outfits allowed us to create three distinct looks while keeping everything cohesive. Between the dressy downtown portraits, relaxed casual photographs, and dramatic lakeside images, their gallery tells a much more varied story than we'd have achieved by staying in one place with one outfit.

When the Weather Doesn't Cooperate, We Adapt!

Fall in Nebraska can be unpredictable, but this year has brought an especially unusual amount of rain. Although we had rain in the forecast, Cassidy and Jackson wanted to go ahead with their session, and I was happy to make it work.

As a wedding photographer, I know that you can't control every condition on a wedding day. You can't guarantee sunshine, perfect light, or a dry forecast. What you can do is work with a photographer who knows how to adapt when conditions change.

I always bring my assistant and off-camera lighting to engagement sessions. My assistant helps us work efficiently and manage equipment, while off-camera lighting gives me greater control over the final photographs, even when natural light isn't ideal.

For this session, we also came prepared to protect our gear from the rain. I'll take a little rain on my camera cover over missing out on a great photograph!

At Lake Manawa, the stormy sky continued to roll in, the water became choppy, and the light changed as the evening grew darker. Instead of calling it quits, we adjusted our lighting and kept creating. We even incorporated an umbrella and some playful photographs in the rain.

Those final images have a completely different mood from the polished downtown portraits. The dramatic sky, textured water, and changing light gave us something distinctive that a perfectly sunny evening might not have produced.

I love problem-solving on the go. That's part of being an experienced wedding photographer: staying calm, thinking creatively, and knowing how to make the most of whatever conditions we encounter.

Why an Engagement Session Is About More Than Beautiful Photos

Your engagement session is one of the best opportunities to experience working with your wedding photographer before the big day. It's not just another item on your wedding checklist. It's a chance to build confidence, get comfortable, and create photographs you'll enjoy using throughout your engagement.

Here are some of the biggest benefits.

  • Get comfortable in front of the camera. You'll learn how I guide you through posing and interaction, so the process feels much more familiar on your wedding day.
  • Build a connection with your photographer. We get to know one another, discover what makes you comfortable, and learn how you naturally interact as a couple.
  • See beautiful photographs of yourselves in advance. Instead of wondering how you'll look in your wedding portraits, you'll already have a gallery showing you what we can create together.
  • Go into your wedding day with greater peace of mind. You'll know what to expect from the photography experience and feel more confident when it's time for portraits.
  • Create personal wedding details. Your engagement photographs can be used for save-the-dates, invitations, reception displays, centerpieces, and a custom-designed signature guestbook created by me.
  • Enjoy a more personalized experience. We can explore locations, outfits, and posing styles that reflect your personalities and help shape the look you want for your wedding photographs.

For Cassidy and Jackson, the session was an opportunity to create a collection of photographs with a wide variety of looks and moods while getting to know one another ahead of their wedding day.

Why Experience, Lighting, and Posing Matter

Beautiful photography involves much more than finding a pretty background. An experienced photographer knows how to work with the environment, guide a couple naturally, and make thoughtful adjustments when conditions change.

Here's what that experience brings to your session:

  • Confidence in changing light and weather. Whether we're working in bright sun, deep shade, overcast skies, or a rainy evening, I know how to adapt our approach.
  • Professional off-camera lighting. I bring additional lighting equipment to help create flattering, consistent light when natural conditions aren't enough.
  • Guided, flattering posing. I'll help you find natural positions and angles that photograph beautifully, then give you simple prompts to create genuine interaction.
  • A prepared team. I bring my assistant and the equipment needed to work efficiently, adjust quickly, and keep the session moving.
  • Creative problem-solving. Sometimes the original plan needs to change. Experience helps me recognize new opportunities and turn unexpected conditions into part of the story.

These skills are especially valuable on a wedding day, when the schedule is fixed and we may have limited time for portraits. Engagement sessions give us the chance to work together before those important moments arrive.

An Engagement Session That's Uniquely Yours

Cassidy and Jackson's session had a little bit of everything: classic downtown architecture, relaxed casual portraits, beautiful natural scenery, stormy skies, and playful moments in the rain.

We couldn't control the weather, but we could control how we responded to it. By being flexible, bringing the right equipment, and embracing the adventure, we created a gallery that reflects both their connection and the unique conditions of the day.

Cassidy and Jackson, thank you for trusting me with your engagement photographs and for being willing to embrace the unexpected! I loved getting to know you both, exploring different locations, and creating something a little different from the typical fall engagement session. I'm looking forward to celebrating with you on your wedding day!

Photographing This Family Again!

One of the most rewarding parts of being a wedding photographer is when families invite me back to document another special chapter in their lives. I had the honor of photographing Cassidy’s sister’s wedding in the summer of 2025, so I was especially excited when Cassidy and Jackson chose me to capture their engagement photographs and upcoming wedding!

It's such a privilege to be welcomed back into a family to preserve more of their memories. Having already worked with their family, I love getting to reconnect, see familiar faces, and continue documenting these important milestones as the years go by.

Cassidy and Jackson, I'm so excited to celebrate with your family again and capture this next special chapter for you!
