Why Personal Photography Projects Matter | Omaha Creative Portrait Photographer
One of the things I love most about photography is that no two sessions have to be the same.
While most people know me for weddings, seniors, families, and pet photography, I also love creating completely custom sessions centered around a person's unique interests and passions. This recent studio session with my son was the perfect example.
Inspired by his love of performing, music, and stage presence, we set out to create something dramatic and artistic. It gave us the opportunity to experiment with wardrobe, posing, and studio lighting in a way that's very different from my typical portrait work. As photographers, it's easy to get comfortable with routines, but personal projects like this push creativity, encourage growth, and often lead to new ideas that can be incorporated into future client sessions.
One of my favorite parts of this session was playing with lighting. Studio photography allows for endless creative possibilities, and creating this dramatic look with bold red lighting completely transformed the mood of the images. It's a reminder that photography isn't just about documenting a moment—it's about creating art that reflects personality and passion.
More importantly, these images capture a piece of who my son is right now. The hobbies, interests, and passions our children have today may change over time, which is why I believe they deserve to be documented just as much as milestones like birthdays, graduations, and family portraits.
Whether your child is a dancer, musician, athlete, actor, artist, gamer, horse enthusiast, or has a passion all their own, a custom portrait session can be designed around what makes them unique. These sessions allow them to express themselves while creating images that become meaningful keepsakes for years to come.
With access to an 8,000-square-foot studio in Omaha, we're able to bring almost any creative vision to life. From dramatic lighting setups and themed portraits to athletic showcases and artistic concepts, the possibilities are nearly endless.
If you've ever had an idea for a photo session but weren't sure if it was possible, I'd love to hear it. Some of the most memorable photographs begin with a simple conversation and a unique idea.
Because the best portraits don't just show what someone looks like—they tell the story of who they are.
