From Family Photos to Senior Year: Capturing Katy's Next Chapter
There are some photography sessions that feel a little more special than others.
I've had the privilege of photographing Katy's family over the years, watching her grow up through our church, and even photographing her sister's senior photos several years ago. So when it was time for Katy's turn in front of my camera, it was pretty special to see just how much she's grown.
And because I'm a photographer, of course we had to take a little trip down memory lane.
One of the images I'm including from this session is actually a photograph of Katy from a family session back in 2019. Looking at that photo next to the young woman she is today is such a reminder of just how quickly these seasons pass.
Now she's a senior at Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and will graduate with the Class of 2027.
What an honor it is to photograph another milestone for this family.
A Senior Session Designed Around Katy
When I plan senior sessions, I don't believe in simply choosing one location, taking a few photos, and calling it a day.
Your senior photos should feel like you.
For Katy's session, we planned out her outfits, locations, and overall look ahead of time so everything worked together. We photographed at my studio, Mt. Vernon Gardens, and throughout Downtown Council Bluffs, giving us a variety of settings and looks throughout her session.
The goal wasn't just to create a lot of different photos. It was to create a gallery that felt cohesive while still giving Katy plenty of variety.
From more polished studio portraits to outdoor images and downtown photos, each location was chosen to complement the outfit and the overall feel we were creating.
Why I Love Using My Studio for Senior Sessions
One of my favorite parts of offering senior photography at Studio 108 is the flexibility it gives us.
My studio is an 8,000-square-foot creative photography space with more than 300 curated props and backgrounds, private changing rooms, makeup areas, and a variety of spaces we can use to create completely different looks.
And perhaps one of the biggest benefits for seniors?
You aren't limited to one or two outfits.
Senior sessions are designed with plenty of time for unlimited outfit changes, which means we can create multiple looks without feeling rushed. We can move between different studio setups, change outfits, and then head outside for locations that complement the rest of the session.
Instead of trying to make one location work with every outfit, we can plan the locations around your style.
That's exactly what we did for Katy.
We started in the studio, where we could create a variety of polished portraits and take advantage of different backgrounds and lighting. From there, we moved to Mt. Vernon Gardens and then finished up around Downtown Council Bluffs.
The result is a gallery with completely different looks while still feeling like one cohesive senior experience.
More Than Just Senior Pictures
One of my favorite things about photographing seniors is getting to know the person they're becoming.
Senior year is such a unique in-between season. They're still the kids you've watched grow up, but they're also stepping into a new chapter and figuring out where life will take them next.
I've known Katy's family for years, so getting to photograph this particular milestone felt especially meaningful.
I photographed her family.
I photographed her sister's senior photos.
I've watched Katy grow up.
And now I'm photographing her senior year.
That kind of history is one of the reasons I love what I do.
