Emma & Ray | A Wedding at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska
Some wedding days are beautiful because of their setting, some because of the thoughtful details, and others because of the people and emotions that make every moment meaningful. Emma and Ray’s wedding day brought all of those things together in a celebration that felt elegant, personal, and full of heart.
High school sweethearts from Omaha, Emma and Ray have been together for 12 years. Although they now call San Francisco home, they chose to return to Omaha to celebrate their wedding, planning their special day from across the country. Their celebration was a beautiful way to bring their story full circle, surrounded by the people who have been part of their lives along the way.
With the stunning Farnam Hotel as the backdrop for their portraits and the newly renovated Joslyn Art Museum as the setting for their ceremony and reception, every part of their wedding offered something beautiful to photograph. But beyond the incredible architecture and carefully chosen details, what made this day so special was the emotion woven into it—and the people (and one very dapper dog!) who made it uniquely theirs.
A Beautiful Start at The Farnam Hotel
The Farnam Hotel provided a gorgeous setting for Emma and Ray’s wedding-day portraits. Its sophisticated interiors, rich textures, and refined atmosphere created a beautiful backdrop for documenting the excitement and anticipation of the day.
I love the way a thoughtfully chosen location can add so much character to wedding photographs without taking attention away from the couple. The elegant surroundings at The Farnam gave us a chance to create portraits that felt polished and timeless while leaving plenty of room for genuine expressions, quiet moments, and all the little interactions that make a wedding day personal.
After 12 years together, there is something especially meaningful about documenting a couple as they step into this next chapter. Their portraits were about more than celebrating a wedding day; they were a reflection of the years, memories, and commitment that brought them here.
The Details That Tell Their Story
One of my favorite parts of a wedding day is photographing the details that bring everything together. The dress, rings, florals, accessories, and carefully coordinated attire all contribute to the overall feeling of the celebration. These are the pieces couples spend so much time choosing, and they deserve to be remembered.
Emma and Ray’s day had a beautiful sense of refinement, with thoughtful details that complemented the architecture of their venues. From the finishing touches of their wedding attire to the floral accents and meaningful personal elements, each detail helped tell the story of their day.
But some of the most memorable details aren't things you can buy or arrange through a florist. They are the personal touches that reflect who a couple is and how much they care about the people around them.
For Emma and Ray, that thoughtfulness extended to every guest who joined them to celebrate. And, of course, no collection of wedding details would be complete without Herbie!
Herbie: The Best-Dressed Ring Bearer
Every wedding has its memorable moments, and including a beloved pet is such a special way to make the day feel even more personal. Herbie was ready for his big moment in an adorable little tuxedo, looking every bit the part of a distinguished member of the wedding party.
But Herbie wasn't just there for portraits—he also had an important job to do as one of the ring bearers during the ceremony!
Including a dog in a wedding takes a little extra planning, but the result is always worth it when that furry family member is such an important part of the couple's life. Herbie's tuxedo portraits were a fun addition to the day, and having him included in the ceremony made the celebration that much more meaningful.
These are the kinds of details I love about wedding photography. Years from now, Emma and Ray won't just remember what their wedding looked like. They'll remember who was there, the personalities that filled the day, and the little moments that made it entirely their own—including their four-legged family member dressed for the occasion!
A Ceremony Surrounded by Art and Memories
The newly renovated Joslyn Art Museum was an incredible setting for Emma and Ray to exchange their vows. With its distinctive architecture and beautiful spaces, the museum brought a sense of history, artistry, and grandeur to their celebration.
But for Emma and Ray, the Joslyn was more than a beautiful Omaha venue. It was a place connected to their childhoods, where they had attended events and participated in performances growing up. Returning to this special place as adults to begin their married life together made the venue an especially meaningful choice.
There is something wonderful about wedding venues that hold a deeper connection to a couple's story. The Joslyn offered a stunning visual backdrop for their ceremony while also representing a personal piece of their history. A place that had been part of their childhood memories became the setting for one of the most important days of their lives.
The anticipation leading up to the ceremony, the emotion of the moment, and the reactions of family and friends are what transform a beautiful event into a meaningful memory. Even in such a remarkable space, the most important part of the ceremony wasn't the architecture. It was the commitment Emma and Ray were making to each other, surrounded by the people who came to celebrate with them.
A Celebration at the Joslyn
Following the ceremony, the celebration continued with a reception at the museum. The combination of the Joslyn's artistic surroundings and the thoughtful wedding details made the entire day feel cohesive, elegant, and distinctly personal.
One of the sweetest examples of Emma and Ray's thoughtfulness was waiting for their guests at dinner. Before the plated dinner was served, each guest had a personal letter from the couple to open at their seat.
Imagine sitting down to dinner at a wedding and finding a handwritten message created just for you by the couple you're there to celebrate! It was such a personal way for Emma and Ray to express their gratitude and let each guest know how much their presence meant to them.
With family and friends gathered from different chapters of their lives, those letters were a beautiful reminder that this celebration wasn't only about two people getting married. It was also about the relationships that had supported them, the memories they shared with their loved ones, and the people they wanted beside them as they began this next chapter.
Reception photography is about so much more than documenting the room. It's about preserving the atmosphere—the finished tables, the florals, the people gathered together, the happy expressions, the spontaneous interactions, and the moments that unfold when everyone can finally relax and celebrate.
Some of the most meaningful photographs happen between the big events. A shared glance, an emotional hug, a burst of laughter, or a moment when the couple pauses to take everything in can become just as treasured as the portraits and ceremony photographs.
Those in-between moments are part of what makes each wedding story different, and they deserve just as much attention as the carefully planned details.
A Wedding Day Full of Meaning
Emma and Ray's wedding was a beautiful reminder that the best celebrations balance the grandeur of a stunning setting with the personal touches that make it feel like home. The Farnam Hotel, the newly renovated Joslyn Art Museum, the thoughtful details, and Herbie's starring role all contributed to a day that was unmistakably theirs.
Their story made the day even more meaningful. From Omaha high school sweethearts to building a life together in San Francisco, Emma and Ray have shared 12 years of memories before reaching this milestone. Planning a wedding from across the country and returning to the city where their story began brought their past and present together in such a special way.
And their thoughtfulness toward their guests was woven throughout the celebration. The personal letters they prepared for everyone to open before dinner were such a heartfelt gesture. It's easy to focus on the big visual elements of a wedding, but those quiet, intentional acts of kindness often say the most about a couple. Emma and Ray made it clear that the people celebrating with them mattered deeply.
Their connection to the Joslyn added another layer of meaning. A place that had been part of their childhoods became the setting for their wedding ceremony and reception, giving them the opportunity to create new memories in a familiar and significant place. And with Herbie in his little tuxedo, proudly included as one of their ring bearers, the day reflected not just their relationship but the family they have built together.
As a wedding photographer, I want couples to have photographs that preserve not only how their wedding looked, but how it felt to be there. The excitement, the emotion, the people who matter most, and the little unexpected moments are what give these images their lasting meaning.
Emma and Ray, thank you for trusting me to document such a special chapter in your story. It was a joy to capture your wedding day, and I hope these photographs bring you back to all the beauty, laughter, and emotion of this celebration for many years to come.
Their Tea Ceremony the Night Before
Emma and Ray's wedding celebration began the evening before with a special tea ceremony, creating another meaningful opportunity to honor family, tradition, and the relationships that brought everyone together.
The wedding day itself was filled with beautiful architecture, thoughtful details, and heartfelt moments, but the tea ceremony was an important part of their larger wedding story, too.
