A January Wedding at La Foret at Black Forest

A January wedding in Colorado comes with a pretty incredible backdrop—and this one was no exception.

I had the opportunity to travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to photograph my brother-in-law’s wedding at La Foret at Black Forest, surrounded by snow-covered trees, beautiful winter scenery, and the unique charm of the Black Forest.

As an Omaha wedding photographer, I’m always excited when I get the opportunity to photograph a wedding somewhere outside of Nebraska. A Colorado wedding in the middle of January was definitely a change of scenery, and the snow-covered landscape made it one to remember.

Photographing a Family Wedding

There was one obvious difference between this wedding and the many others I photograph throughout the year—I wasn’t just photographing a client.

I was photographing my brother-in-law.

That definitely made this wedding a little different from a typical wedding day. I still had my photographer brain turned on—watching the timeline, looking for the best light, helping with portraits, and making sure all of the important moments were documented—but I also got to experience the day from a different perspective.

It was a fun change of pace and a pretty special opportunity to photograph a wedding for someone in the family.

January Wedding Portraits

Winter weddings can offer some of the most unique portrait opportunities.

You don't need perfect summer weather or blooming greenery to create beautiful wedding photographs. Snow can actually add another layer of texture and atmosphere to your images, especially when paired with Colorado's evergreen trees.

For couples considering a winter wedding, I always recommend embracing the season rather than trying to make your wedding look like it happened in another season.

Bring the fur wrap. Step into the snow. Use the pine trees. Let the season become part of your photographs.

Those details are what make your wedding gallery feel connected to the place and time your wedding actually happened.
